After the US Capitol was broken into by Trump supporters and caused violent clashes, both Twitter and Facebook suspended Trump's accounts. Trump previously expressed "I love you" to the protesters on social media and asked them to go home, but he did not condemn the violence and still claimed to be a victim of election fraud.
Twitter expressed the hope that Trump would delete the three posts that "seriously violated the terms of use". If he does not delete or continues to violate the Twitter rules, his account will be permanently closed.
Facebook and Instagram also suspended Trump's accounts for 24 hours, and YouTube also deleted Trump's speeches to the demonstrators.
President who loves Twitter
Trump prefers to use social media to express opinions and release news. He often publishes his views on other politicians, celebrities and current affairs on Twitter and other social media platforms. Since Trump ran for the president on behalf of the Republican Party, he has accumulated a lot of fans and supporters on Twitter. So far, he has more than 88 million followers on Twitter.
Since Trump assumed the presidency, his Twitter has almost become the official news release channel of the US President, bypassing the White House press secretary and becoming a new way of communicating directly with people. However, based on the current situation, it is difficult to see Trump continue to post tweets in the usual controversial style on Twitter in the future.
What clause violated?
From a technical point of view, Twitter only suspended Trump's account use and stated that if he deletes the three questionable tweets, he can continue to use it. But Twitter also said that if it continues to violate Twitter regulations in the future, it will permanently close the @realDonaldTrump account.
The problem is that according to Trump's Twitter style, it is only a matter of time before the regulations are violated again. Twitter’s citizenship terms of use state that “users may not use the Twitter service to manipulate or interfere with elections and other civic affairs.”
Trump often tweeted that there was large-scale fraud in the election, but he was unable to produce evidence, which clearly violated the aforementioned terms of use on Twitter.
Why not close early?
Simply put, this is Trump's prerogative as president, and Twitter has more particularly applicable regulations for leaders of all countries in the world. Twitter believes that sometimes it is in the public interest to allow the president to speak freely. Therefore, during Trump's presidency, although he often made controversial comments on Twitter, he never closed his account.
But this time Trump seems to have surpassed the red line. His remarks on social media are considered to add fuel to the demonstrators, and eventually lead to the situation getting out of control and some people even lose their lives. It can be expected that once Trump leaves the presidency and becomes an ordinary civilian, his Twitter privileges will also disappear.
