Israel has said it tried to kill Hamas military chief Mohammad Deif several times, killing two extremists in its attacks on Tuesday night. There have been rocket attacks on Israel. Hamas says they have targeted an airbase in the south. Ceasefire efforts are being made between the two sides, but they do not seem to be progressing. France has made a resolution to the UN Security Council with Egypt and Jordan to stop the violence, but it is a draft.
The United States has been consistently obstructing efforts to issue a joint statement from the Security Council, although it has appealed for a ceasefire. At least 219 people have lost their lives so far in the violence that has been going on for the past 10 days. According to hamas' health ministry, which controls Gaza, about 100 women and children are among those killed.
Israel says at least 150 extremists are among those killed in Gaza. Hamas has not given any data about the deaths of its people. According to Israel, 12 people, including two children, have died here. It says extremists from Gaza have fired nearly 4,500 rockets at them.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the military operation in Gaza "will continue as long as necessary". He has also told officials in southern Israel that the operation could end "in several days." Netanyahu has claimed that this time Hamas has received shocks that it did not expect and have gone back years. "Enemies around us can see what we charge for attacks against us,"

Attacks between the two sides continued throughout the night on Tuesday. The Israeli military has said that their warplanes have attacked Hamas military bases and commanders' homes. BBC correspondent Rushdie Abualof, who was in Gaza, said israeli planes carried out more than 70 attacks on a building apartment in Gaza, killing two Palestinian extremists there.
